Are the buckled strap the only closure for the case? I found on my current case that these fail quickly.

Yes, that straps are what hold the case closed. We've not had any problems with those over the years so I'm not sure if the problems you had have been with poor quality cases or if it has something to do with how you're shipping them, but I can't think of why that would cause the straps to fail. Almost all of the larger cases are held closed with straps so there aren't many options I'm aware of that don't have them once you go over a certain size.

Can you confirm what kind of straps hold this case closed? From the image, they look like Velcro straps, and I just wanted to confirm they are not Velcro straps, but are straps that clip together?

No, the straps are not velcro. They're fabric, like a seat belt, and close with the heavy duty plastic buckle.
